Hurry Up That Man’s Promotion!
(610 PM) Jackson Tenn 2 PM Oct 7 1862
For Gen Halleck If possible have McPherson
made Maj Genl he should be
made at once to take rank
above others who may be promoted
for the late battles signed U.S. Grant
Union General James McPherson was born on this day in 1828, so it seemed appropriate to share this message from Grant to Halleck, recommending a swift promotion. Seniority mattered and promotions were flying fast and furious in those days. The promotion came through the following day, and a little over a month later McPherson was put in command of the XVII Corps.
