Get Those Soldiers Paid
630 pm City Point Mch 21st 1865
230 pm 20th for Secy of War. I would recommend
relieving Crook from command of his Dept and ordering
him to command the Cavalry of the Army of the Potomac.
I would call attention to the fact that our
white troops are being paid whilst the colored troops
are not if paymaster could be ordered here immediately
to commence paying them it would have a
fine effect – US Grant
The Union Army was only a few days away from capturing Petersburg when U.S. Grant sent this telegram to the Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton. It’s nice to see that even with his promotion, Grant paid attention to the travails of the common soldiers, and the African American soldiers at that. Life wasn’t easy for African Americans anywhere, but Grant wasn’t about to let his soldiers go unpaid, regardless of the color of their skin.
